Note :- It takes 8 Hours to reach by road from Dehradun to Kharsali. Travelling is not allowed after 8 p.m. as the travelling is in hilly region, it is advisable to all devotees who have problem during travelling to keep proper medicines with them for preventing vomiting or any discomfort during travel.

There are two routes from Dehradun by road:-
1. Via Mussoorie (It has sharp turn and hilly road)-195km Approx
2. Via Vikas Nager (It is comparatively better than Ist option)-185km Approx

It takes 8 Hours to reach by road from Dehradun to Kharsali. Travelling is not allowed after 8 p.m.

Yamunotri has an all year cold climate. It has a pleasant climate in the summers(April to July). The maximum temperature rises to about 15°C - 16°C and the minimum temperature falls to about 5°C 6°C in summers.

It is advisable that all devotees should plan carefully to ensure their health & safety as per their health concerns. Keep sufficient woollen clothes. Keep proper & regular medicines, if any.

Yamunotri Dham is located at 31.01°N 78.45°E. It has an average elevation of 3,954 meters (12,972 ft) from sea level.

Nearest petrol pump of Yamunotri is located at near barkot which is 45 k.m. far. So if you are comming by car than keep the tank full at this location.

Transportation

By Air

Jolly Grant Airport is the nearest Airport to Yamunotri situated at a distance of 210kms. It is well connected to Delhi with daily flights. Janki Chatti is directly not connected by motorable roads with Jolly Grant Airport but taxis are available from Jolly Grant Airport to Janki Chatti. Helicopter services are also available till Kharsali, Yamunotri from Dehradun. We will update the contact number in march if possible for Helicopter booking.

By Train

The nearest railway stations to Yamunotri are Rishikesh and Dehradun. Dehradun railway station is situated 175kms from Yamunotri and Rishikesh railway station is situated 200kms before Yamunotri on NH58. Rishikesh and Dehradun are well connected by railway networks with major destinations of India. Trains to Rishikesh are frequent. Janki Chatti is well connected by motorable roads with Rishikesh and Dehradun. Taxis and buses are available from Rishikesh, Tehri Garhwal, Uttarkashi and Barkot and many other destinations to Janki Chatti.

By Road

Yamunotri is directly not connected with motorable roads and the trek commences from Janki Chatti. Janki Chatti is well connected by motorable roads with major destinations of Uttarakhand state. Buses to Rishikesh are available from ISBT Kashmiri Gate. Buses and Taxis to Janki Chatti are easily available from major destinations of Uttarakhand state like Rishikesh, Dehradun, Tehri, Uttarkashi, Barkot etc.

Places to visit near Yamunotri Dham

Yamunotri Temple

Yamunotri is one of the Char Dham and it is also first place to visit in the Char Dham Circuit. Thousands of devotees visit the sacred shrine of Yamunotri temple every month from May to October.

Yamunotri Temple was constructed by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal.

The temple holds immense importance amongst the Hindus. Yamunotri is the source of the Yamuna River which is one of the major rivers of India.

Yamunotri Temple kapat will open on 09-May-2016 and closes on the second day after Diwali festival.

Janki Chatti

It is the midpoint of the trek to Yamunotri which is accessible by jeeps. Janki Chatti is situated 7kms before Yamunotri and this place is popular for thermal springs.

Situated at an elevation of 2,650 mts above sea level. Janki Chatti encompasses the last village in the region and it acts as the major hub for the pilgrims traveling to Yamunotri.

The thermal springs of Janki Chatti acts as an inevitable part of the Yamunotri pilgrimage. Ponies and palanquins are available at Janki Chatti. Janki Chatti is surrounded by mountains on all sides and lies in close proximity of the Indo-China border.

A large numbers of devotees visit this place from May to October. You can purchase raincoats and other necessary items from Janki Chatti.

Hanuman Chatti

River Yamuna at Hanuman Chatti is one among the thrilling climbs in the rocky terrain and it is situated 13 kilometers away from Yamunotri. The Hanuman Chatti is the starting point of both Yamunotri and Dodital Trek. It is basically the confluence of Ganga and Yamuna River.

Further, this region is more famous as a beautiful trekking spot. Right from the splendid hills to the aromatic meadows, everything that defines trekking as a beautiful expedition, is found here.

Surya Kund

There are many natural thermal springs in Yamunotri of which Surya Kund is renowned. Pilgrims tie potatoes and rice to cook it by immersing it under water of Surya Kund. After cooking it is served as prasad.

Surya Kund near the Yamunotri temple is called so, because Yamuna is the mythological offspring of Surya or Sun.

The temperature of Surya Kund is 88 degrees. The presence of this thermal spring bordered by snow-covered mountain peaks adds to the divine ambience of the place.

As a testimonial to the mythological belief that the Sun is the father of River Yamuna,Yamuothri houses a hot water spring. A hot water spring in the precincts of snowy strengthens one's faith in the spirituality of the place.

Divya Shilla

A powerful rock pillar located near the Surya Kund at Yamunotri, Divya Shila presents a ethereal feeling to the devotees. It is conventional that all the devotees should make poojas here at Divya Shila before they enter Yamunotri.

Though the voyage is quite tiresome, it would fetch the devotees with a unique experience of divinity and holiness, which would help them to forget all their pain and suffering.

The devout and the tourists equally like this exciting spot that situates at an altitude of 3000 meters. Though a dangerous path, the devotees found pleasure in climbing this colossal embankment since it is highly rewarding with the most tranquil environment.

Saptarishi Kund

A natural lake that happens to be the most enthralling spot in Yamunotri, Saptarishi Kund is regarded as the origin of Yamuna River. At an altitude of 4421 meters, this scenic spot is not easily accessible and it is considered as one among the most tedious treks in the Himalayas.

The trek from yamunotri temple to Saptrishi kund, the source of yamunotri river, Actually Yamuna is a raging torrent at Yamunotri Temple coming from sacred saptrishi Kund at the feet of the Champasar Glacier.

Yamunotri trek is not only tough but also very very chellanging, you will experience fastest descent and ascend of your life, You will camp at 600 ft above the yamunotri temple, you might trek in total darkness on the edges of terrifying gorges, but one thing is certain that you will be filled with joy of adventure and enriched with a life time fulfilling experience.

Kharsali (Kushi Math)

Located very close to Janki Chatti, Kharsali is among the best places for sightseeing around Yamunotri.Kharsali is a quaint little village located in the town of Uttarkashi.Visiting Kharsali has now become easier than before as the government has decided to keep open the Char Dham Yatra during winters, devotees can worship Goddess Yamuna at Kharsali during the winters.

Importance of Kharsali is known as the home of Goddess Yamuna during winters when the Yamunotri Shrine becomes inaccessible due to heavy snowfall.

Kharsali also houses the oldest Shani Dev Temple of India; the idol of Goddess Yamuna is kept at the Shani Dev Temple during the winters.The temple in itself is a beautiful piece of architecture, the temple made up of stones, wood and a mortar made up by Urad dal (Pulse), has surprisingly withstood earthquakes and other natural calamities since ages. It is believed that the temple was built by the Pandavas.

Every year on the occasion of Bhai Dooj which is two days after Diwali, the idol of Goddess Yamuna is brought to the temple and prayed here till the end of winters. Another interesting attraction here is an ancient Lord Shiva temple. Here Lord Shiva is depicted in his Someshwar form.

Barkot

Situated at an altitude of 1220 meters, Barkot is a wonderful trekking destination. It is just 49 kilometers away from Yamunotri and is known for providing a perfect sight of the Banderpoonch peak along with various other Himalayan ranges.

The place is also famous for its serene landscape, which is further complemented by the spouting water of the holy Yamuna River. Moreover, amidst all these picture-perfect beauties is an ancient temple that is much visited by the tourists.

Dodital

The Dodital is a mysterious lake, which as per the mythological beliefs is the birthplace of Lord Ganesha. The reason why it is considered a mysterious lake is, its depth is still unknown to people. Furthermore, this wonderful marvel of the nature is situated at a height of around 3307 meters above the sea level and is beautifully enveloped by the dense woods of deodar, oak and rhododendrons.

It is believed that Dodital is the land of Shiva, and so it is frequented by pilgrims from all over India.

Adventure seekers and ardent nature lovers head here too, for they know that it is nature's treasure house. The forest surrounding the lake at Dodital is also full of wildlife. It provides an idyllic set up for rest and recreational activities like angling, boating, nature watch and bird watching.

From Dodital, it's a two-day trek to Hanumanchatti via Darwa Top. Darwa Top provides a majestic view of the Garhwal Himalayas.
